Enjoy a spectacular long- weekend of jazz, varying from traditional to contempory, New Orleans to gospel to Afro-jazz to name a few

BIF will once again be creating its own intimate jazz club at The Palace Hotel, in the heart of the town. Events will also take place in the Pavilion Arts Centre and at the iconic Buxton Opera House.

The Jazz Weekender Plus is a heavily discounted package of tickets that include sentry to all BIF jazz gigs from Thursday 4 to Monday 8 July PLUS seats in the stalls for La tragédie de Carmen, Peter Brook’s gritty adaptation of Bizet’s opera.

Thursday 4 July

Ian Shaw

The incredible, multi-award winning Ian Shaw and his 8-piece band kicks things off with a full show and the launch of his latest album Greek Street Friday.

Friday 5 July

Deschanel Gordon

Still only in his twenties pianist Deschanel Gordon is fast becoming a big name on the London jazz scene.  The former BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year’s sound is steeped in swing with influences ranging from gospel to reggae to neo-soul.

 

Opera: La Tragédie de Carmen

A brutal, gritty tale of self-destruction fuelled by lust, set to some of the most famous music in opera.  Peter Brook’s adaptation of Bizet’s Carmen doesn’t hold back.

 

Emily Brown Quartet

Expect a power packed gig from this exceptional quartet, who have a gift for harmonic risk-taking and accessing emotional depth.

Nearly Dan

The spirit and sound of Steely Dan arrives in Buxton, on a tour that’s taken Jazz Café London and Concorde 2 in Brighton.

 

Ubunye

This vibrant Afro-jazz band play a unique blend of contemporary jazz, Afro-pop and traditional ‘Isigqui’ Zulu music.

 

Hot Jazz Trio

A late-night, laid-back jazz gig to wind down with after a day of dancing in the aisles. Sit back, relax and enjoy the music!

Jef Neve – That Old Feeling

Music that takes you on a journey and makes you smile, from Damien Rice to Marvin Gaye along with their own works. An octet with two stunning singers.

 

Zoe Rahman Octet – Colour of sound

The Ivor Novello winner fronts an 8-piece band with music from her most ambitious and uplifting recent album.

Zoe Rahman brings her Octet and latest jazz album – a many-hued, uplifting large-ensemble of music.

 

Dean Stockdale Quartet – ‘Celebrating Oscar’

Performing new arrangements of Oscar Peterson compositions and music from famous albums such as Night Train, We Get Requests, and The Canadiana Suite.

Monday 8 July

Alan Barnes Swingtet

After a phenomenal gig with Wynton Marsalis in Buxton last year, Alan Barnes returns, ready to wow the crowds again with his Swingtet.

 

Threeway, with special guest John Etheridge

Ben Crosland’s trio launch their 20th anniversary celebrations in Buxton, with special guest John Etheridge.

 

New Orleans Social Club – 10 piece band

An all-star cast closes the weekend, fronted by one of the world’s leading New Orleans clarinettists Adrian Cox.  He’ll be playing alongside a string quartet led by Gabriella Swallow and guest singer Tommy Blaize, from BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.
