A Buxton International Festival production, featuring the Orchestra of Opera North
'Terrific verve'The Times
'Dramatically effective'The Stage
Ambroise Thomas’ Hamlet is a powerful example of 19th-century French Grand Opera – known for its sweeping spectacle, dramatic storytelling, and rich orchestration. A major figure of his time, Thomas saw Hamlet performed over 270 times during his lifetime before it faded from the stage – until now.
Based on Shakespeare’s iconic play, the opera explores themes of revenge, madness, and doomed love. Thomas heightens the psychological drama with a lush score, giving special prominence to Ophelia, whose haunting mad scene became a showpiece of the era.
‘This music has it all—beautiful melodies, virtuosic arias, and stirring choruses. It’s an unforgettable, rarely performed work that deserves to be heard again.’ – Adrian Kelly, BIF’s Artistic Director
Buxton International Festival returns to its roots with this revival, having first staged Hamlet in 1980, led then by a young Sir Thomas Allen as Hamlet.
Music by A Thomas, libretto by M Carré and J Barbier, based on an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
Sung in French with English surtitles.
Please be aware: This performance contains violence, sexual references and themes of mutilation.
Note: Please note the 7pm start, rather than the traditional 7.15pm.
