Buxton International Festival (4 -21 July 2024) is delighted to be collaborating with The Orchestra of Opera North for its new production of Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Ernani’ between 5 and 20 July 2024. The orchestra last played at the festival 30 years ago. Ernani, an operatic dramma lirico in four acts, will be conducted by Buxton’s artistic director, Adrian Kelly.

Under the baton of maestro Kelly, with internationally renowned soloists and the wonderful BIF chorus, all directed by Jamie Manto, we expect Ernani to be an extraordinary experience that will enchant and inspire our audience.”
Commenting Sir Richard Mantle, Opera North’s general director said: ‘Opera North is delighted that, after thirty years since our last collaboration, we will be providing our orchestra for Buxton Festival’s production of Verdi’s Ernani.’
Verdi’s ‘Ernani’ tells the tragic love story of Elvira, who is caught between three men: her lover, her guardian and the King of Spain. In keeping with festival’s reputation for offering rarely performed operas, Ernani is one of five operas scheduled for 2024. The others are: Handel’s Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno, Peter Brook’s adaptation of Bizet’s ‘La Tragedie de Carmen; Ethel Smyth’s, ‘The Boatswain’s Mate’ and Joseph Haydn’s ‘La Canterina’.
