A BIF Fundraiser for the DEC's Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal, featuring music from Ukrainian soprano Inna Husieva

‘A Crime Against Peace’ – A BIF Fundraiser for the DEC’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

Ukraine’s people face catastrophe. How did it happen, how can we help them and how should Britain face up to war on the European mainland? In this special Festival event we are delighted to be joined by two thinkers trying to answer these horrific challenges. Tom Tugendhat is a Conservative MP who, as Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, is playing a central role in our national response. Before entering politics he served as a Territorial Army officer in Iraq and Afghanistan, and, as a civilian, helped set up the government in Helmand Province and later served as a military assistant to the Chief of the Defence Staff. Oliver Bullough writes regularly for the Guardian and New York Times, and as an author has explored the depth of Britain’s financial ties with Russia’s elite. They will be in conversation with Julian Glover, in an event that will finish with the Ukrainian soprano Inna Husieva performing two Ukrainian songs and ‘Tsaryu Nebesnyy’ (O Heavenly King) – a beautiful prayer composed by Tetiana Yashvili.

Tom Tugendhat MBE MP is the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee. He had been the Conservative MP for Tonbridge and West Malling since 2015.

Oliver Bullough is the author of Butler to the World: How Britain Became the Servant of Tycoons, Tax dodgers, Kleptocrats and Criminals. He was author of the financial expose Moneyland, a Sunday Times bestseller, and two celebrated books about the former Soviet Union: The Last Man in Russia and Let Our Fame Be Great.

Soprano Inna Husieva was born in Donetsk, Ukraine. She completed her master’s degree at the Pyotr Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine under the tutelage of Professor Evdokia Kolesnik. Since 2017, Inna has been working with the Open Opera Ukraine, specialising in the performance of baroque repertoire.  Inna is a 2021/22 Young Artist at the National Opera Studio.

For each £15 ticket sold, Buxton International Festival will donate £5 to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.
