Martin Gayford

It is with great regret that for the first time in forty years we must cancel the Buxton International Festival in July 2020. This is an enormous disappointment but the health and well-being of our audience, our volunteers, the BIF team and all the artists involved is of primary concern. By taking this difficult decision now we are safeguarding the Festival for the Future. Read our full statement here.

Please save the dates for next year’s Festival taking place 2 – 18 July 2021.

The Pursuit of Art

Spectator Art Critic and Radio 3 broadcaster Martin Gayford recounts journeys as varied as those to see Brancusi’s Endless Column in Romania, prehistoric cave art in France, the museum island of Naoshima in Japan, the Judd Foundation in Marfa, Texas, and Anselm Kiefer’s extraordinary ‘underworld’ at Barjac, France.

Interwoven with these tales are other journeys, to meet artists. These encounters not only provide insights into the way artists approach and think about their art, but also reveal the importance of their personal environments. And in the process, Gayford discusses how these meetings impact on his own evolving ideas and tastes.
