Helen Lewis

It is with great regret that for the first time in forty years we must cancel the Buxton International Festival in July 2020. This is an enormous disappointment but the health and well-being of our audience, our volunteers, the BIF team and all the artists involved is of primary concern. By taking this difficult decision now we are safeguarding the Festival for the Future. Read our full statement here.

Please save the dates for next year’s Festival taking place 2 – 18 July 2021.

Difficult Women: A History of Feminism in 11 Fights

Fearless and funny, Helen Lewis is a staff writer at The Atlantic, a former deputy editor of the New Statesman and a regular panellist on the News Quiz. She argues that feminism’s success is down to complicated, contradictory, imperfect women, who fought each other as well as fighting for equal rights. Too many of these pioneers have been whitewashed or forgotten in our modern search for feel-good, inspirational heroines.

Helen seeks to reveal the unvarnished – and unfinished – history of women’s rights and asks, why the feminist movement has succeeded – and what it should do next. The battle is difficult, and we must be difficult too!
