Bettany Hughes

It is with great regret that for the first time in forty years we must cancel the Buxton International Festival in July 2020. This is an enormous disappointment but the health and well-being of our audience, our volunteers, the BIF team and all the artists involved is of primary concern. By taking this difficult decision now we are safeguarding the Festival for the Future. Read our full statement here.

Please save the dates for next year’s Festival taking place 2 – 18 July 2021.

Venus & Aphrodite

Through ancient art, evocative myth, exciting archaeological revelations and philosophical explorations, award-winning historian and broadcaster Bettany Hughes explains why the ancient goddess Venus – called Aphrodite by the Greeks – endures through to the twenty-first century, and what her journey through time reveals about what matters to us as humans. On her voyage of discovery to reveal the truth behind Venus, Bettany reveals how this mythological figure is so much more than nudity, romance and sex. It is both the remarkable story of one of antiquity’s most potent forces and the story of human desire – how it transforms who we are and how we behave.
