A.N. Wilson

It is with great regret that for the first time in forty years we must cancel the Buxton International Festival in July 2020. This is an enormous disappointment but the health and well-being of our audience, our volunteers, the BIF team and all the artists involved is of primary concern. By taking this difficult decision now we are safeguarding the Festival for the Future. Read our full statement here.

Please save the dates for next year’s Festival taking place 2 – 18 July 2021.

The Mystery of Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens was a superb public performer, a great orator and one of the most famous of Victorians. Slight of build, with a frenzied, hyper-energetic personality, Dickens looked much older than his fifty-eight years when he died – an occasion marked by a crowded funeral at Westminster Abbey, despite his wishes for a small affair. Filled with the twists, pathos and the sort of unusual characters that sprang from the author’s imagination, AN Wilson looks back from Dickens’ death to recall the key events in his life. In doing so, he seeks to understand Dickens’ creative genius and enduring popularity.
