Candlelight Carol – John Rutter

All John Rutter’s music is beautiful but this carol is my favourite.

We play this every year at Cromford Community Band and I have also sung it in the church choir. It is a moment of peace in the Christmas madness, grounding me and reminding me what Christmas is actually about.

“Gloria, Gloria in excelsis Deo! Angels are singing, The Christ child is born”

I need a Silent Night – Amy Grant

Amy Grant is my favourite artist. I have most of her albums and she has produced a number of fabulous Christmas albums. Every year we put up the tree, light our Christmas candles, pour a glass of port and then put on one of her albums. Our favourite album is Amy Grant  – A Christmas to Remember (1999) and definitely worth a listen whilst sitting by the fire with a mince pie and some mulled wine.

However this particular track is slightly different to her usual Christmas songs and it totally describes me at Christmas. Every year I plan to be more organised but it still comes to the final week before Christmas and I’m rushing around madly from concert to school show to work event and desperately trying to fit Christmas shopping in between and cursing myself for not having sorted everything out earlier. I’m sure I’m not the only person who longs for a silent night in the Christmas chaos.

One more sleep til Christmas – A Muppet Christmas Carol

It’s not Christmas until you’ve watched A Muppet Christmas Carol. Even if you don’t like the muppets this is worth a watch. From the Dickensian rat chorus to the penguin skating party to the poignant shivering, hungry and homeless rabbit, I think this is Muppet genius – with a little help from Charles Dickens!
